Kaala is aging, the scale of time. All entities in the world, Aabrahma stamba paryantam- from the Creator to the blade of grass- are subject to change over the scale of time. We see that the physical manifestation of Lord Shankara is also a form, a Kaarya, so to say. How is it that It defies the scale of time? We have seen that all entities in the world are manifestations of the Lord Himself. Yet they all lose their status & vanish in the face of time. Doesn't it mean that Lord Shiva is also subject to the scale of time? But we also see from other descriptions that Lord Shiva defies & transcends Time. The Lord has also bestowed Chiranjeevitva upon many personalities in history: This is the popular Shloka we recite during the morning prayers for longevity-
